An appreciation for the deep connection that we have with the natural world has always existed. In almost every society that anthropologists have studied, one of the central deities, and in many cases the central deity, was the Earth. Even our language reflects an understanding of the power of placing your feet on the Earth. Among northern German tribes, the Teutonic word for temple means "forest."
