Details of Professional Experience (back to top)

For the University of Phoenix Southern California and Washington Campuses:
Teach environmental science, environmental ethics, critical thinking and decision making, project management, computer science, and general studies courses in learning skills for adult students returning to the university setting. Also conduct independent study and distance learning programs with individual students. Developed courses that are used nationally by the university.

For the Environment News Service
:
Write a weekly column called "Healing Our World," a part of the environmental news for the Lycos Search Engine and Internet Guide, in which I reflect on environmental and social issues of concern. Over 15,000 people per day read the column.

For Discovery Park, Seattle Department of Parks and Recreation
Managed all education and groundskeeping operations at the 534 acre Discovery Park in Seattle with a budget of over $1 million. Created innovative environmental education partnerships with the King County West Point Wastewater Treatment Plant, the Daybreak Star Indian Cultural Arts Center, the Seattle Astronomical Society, and others. Began the process of significantly changing the way the City of Seattle manages its forest resources by altering the way the forest management planning process worked. Because of my efforts, the Forest Management Plan for Discovery Park will consider all ecosystems and habitats, not just forested acres as had been previously planned. Developed innovative techniques for managing invasive plants. Created a staffing plan that redesigned positions and increased efficiency and customer service.

For West Los Angeles College
During this full time summer faculty appointment, I taught two accelerated Evironmental Science courses for an adult liberal arts degree completion program. The courses were team taught with another instructor who taught a Communications class.

For Antioch University
:
For this liberal arts institution specializing in adult degree completion programs, design and teach experiential upper division courses in environmental studies that include urban and ecological economics, water policy, urban environmental geography, land use planning, institutional development, transportation planning, historic and aesthetic considerations, and the interaction of all these disciplines with public interests. Courses taught also include ecopsychology, deep ecology, spiritual ecology, ecofeminism, community activism, the despair and empowerment process, humanities, advanced learning techniques and astronomy. Also evaluate students' prior learning documentation for assignment of course credit and conduct independent study courses. Designed a complete curriculum for a Master of Science program in Environmental Studies. See some of the course descriptions.

For the California Institute of Technology/Jet Propulsion Laboratory:
April 1994-September 1998: Educational Outreach Manager for the Outer Planets/Solar Probe Project. Responsible for the educational outreach activities for this mission to send spacecraft to the planet Pluto, Jupiter’s moon Europa, and the Sun. 1987 to 1991: Team Chief and Subsystem Manager, Project TOPEX. Responsible for the design and implementation of a $6 million system to provide the daily operations planning environment for the Ocean Topography Experiment, a joint mission between the United States (NASA) and France (Centre Nationale Etudies Spaciale - CNES). Responsible for the design, staffing, and operation of the Mission Planning and Sequencing Team.
1986-1987: Space Station Program. Authored "Utilizing The Space Station, A Policy Guide". This document will aid future users of the Space Station in understanding the policies, procedures, and operating environment of the Station.
1981-1986: Project Galileo. Designed computer software, documented functional requirements, and established spacecraft sequence design techniques.
1977-1981: Project Voyager. Planned Voyager spacecraft sequences including the strategy for maximum data recovery. Acted as deputy team chief.

For The Evelyn Wood Reading Dynamics Program:
Taught state-of-the-art programs in reading and learning dynamics to corporate and general audiences, increasing participants reading speeds from the hundreds of words per minute to the thousands with a commensurate increase in comprehension.

For the Union Institute:
As Adjunct Professor, taught courses in environmental studies, physical sciences, and astronomy. As Member of the Faculty, advised students on the development of the plan for their degree completion programs which included: analysis of transcripted learning for credit determination; analysis of prior learning and life experience and determination of applicability for academic credit; the development of prior learning portfolios and career and academic counseling.

Strategic Partnerships Formed, Volunteer Management, Fundraising,
Project Management (back to top)

Created an environmental education partnership between the City of Seattle at Discovery Park and the King County West Point Wastewater Treatment Plant for the first time in park history. Cooperative public environmental education programs are now underway that begin with nature experiences following the human impact on water and ending with a tour and discussion at the wastewater treatment plan. Because of my efforts a complete program for elementary school children is now being designed that will continue this program.

Secured the donation of a complete website design from a company in Seattle

Developed volunteer recruitment, training, and retention programs for the Nature Conservancy, Seattle Parks Department, EarthWays Foundation and others

Secured a $60,000 partnership between Caltech and the Art Center College of Design for a student project. See the results of this partnership at the JPL Pluto Express website.

Read about some of the student involvement projects I initiated at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

A creative partnership I initiated with the Griffith Observatory and Planetarium and the Pluto Express project resulted in the development of a planetarium show and the creation of a 360-degree panorama of the Pluto surface - all at no cost to the project.

Managed all education and groundskeeping operations at the 534 acre Discovery Park in Seattle with a budget of over $1 million.

Managed educational outreach activities for spacecraft missions for the California Institute of Technology's Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Designed and gave teacher training workshops in Earth and space science education, teaching innovative learning and teaching techniques while serving as Educational Outreach Manager.

Managed projects ranging from educational outreach program with a budget of a $3.5 million to a $6 million technical project.
